NIGER DELTA MAY NOT VOTE FOR ATIKU
"WHY NIGER DELTA MAY NOT VOTE FOR ATIKU AND DIVORCE THE PDP FOR NOW IS BECAUSE OF THE NNPC SALES PROPOSAL"- Asari Dokubo.
"Sales of the NNPC would rob off the economic gains of the common man in no time and the Niger Delta region would have been wiped off the Nigeria topography. Once your friends who are majorly Fulani Hausas buys it; it then mean we have been colonised in our own kingdoms. Never!!!! It won't be easy for ATIKU and his friends to buy up our ancestral home lands. It is an abomination. When and where the federal government is tired of the use of our lands then it must be return back to the aborigines not sells to foreigners. That is the constitution. If ATIKU want to restructure Nigeria then selling the NNPC even to me Asari Dokubo is not the way to go. The entire Niger Delta region won't allow that to stand. Never!!!!!"

RESURGENT ECONOMY: 10 THINGS TO KNOW, BY PRESIDENCY
RESURGENT ECONOMY: 10 THINGS TO KNOW, BY PRESIDENCY
The Fourth Quarter 2018 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) results released recently by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) give lots of cause to cheer.
Below are salient points to note from the report, as the Muhammadu Buhari administration puts the Nigerian economy on firm, solid footing:
1. The economy has recorded continued progress since it emerged from recession in 2017. Current result shows a Real GDP growth of 2.38% compared to 1.81% in Q3 last year, representing the strongest growth since the economy slipped into recession in 2016.
2. For more than five decades, Nigeria has paid lip service to diversifying the economy, from sole dependence on oil. The latest result shows that economic growth has continued to be driven by the non-oil sector, which grew by 2.70% in Q4 2018, up from 2.32% in Q3 2018. It represents the strongest growth in the sector since Q4 2015.
3. The non-oil GDP growth was driven by Quarrying and Other Minerals, followed by Telecommunications, Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Construction. That is diversification in progress, real time, no matter what the naysayers may say.
4. While the non-oil sector actually drove GDP growth, the oil sector contracted with crude oil and gas GDP reducing by -1.62%. This shows that with good governance, focus, prudence and accountability, the life of the country need not depend on oil ad infinitum.
5. The NBS report further shows that Services GDP growth recorded its best performance in 11 quarters, growing by 2.90% compared to 2.64% in Q3 2018 and 0.10% in Q4 2017. Overall, while growth in the economy was moderated by the contraction in the oil sector, 39 out of 46 economic activities recorded positive growth in the quarter under review.
6. The improved GDP growth can be attributed to Government's continuous implementation of the policy initiatives in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which has boosted the performance of the non-oil sector.
7. The growth in Q4 2018 GDP is consistent with the improvements in other macroeconomic indicators, including inflation, capital inflows, foreign trade, external reserves, amongst others.
8. Headline inflation has been trending downwards from 18.55% as at December 2016 to 15.37% in December 2017 and further to 11.44% in December 2018.
9. The total value of capital importation into Nigeria stood at $2,140 million in the fourth quarter of 2018. This translates to a full year capital inflow of $16,812 million compared to $12,228 million in 2017.
10. Although the economy is now growing, more still must be done to deepen its diversification and make it less vulnerable to external shocks. That is an unflinching commitment of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Those who do not see any good in something not initiated by them toil endlessly to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that nothing good is happening on the economic front. But facts are stubborn things. The more they try to deny the facts, the more they rudely stare at them in the face.
With the Buhari administration, economic Eldorado beckons. Nigeria is inexorably set for that Next Level.

EFCC DETAINS ATIKUS MAN OVER $4M CASH HAUL
Businessman Giwa-Osagie quizzed, DSS withdraws invitation to five INEC officials
Detectives are holding a businessman who is said to be an associate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.
Mr. Uyi Giwa-Osagie is being suspected of allegedly laundering about $4million, which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) believes to be “suspicious election cash”.
Uyi’s detention followed an intelligence report on a suspicious transaction by a Bureau De Change operator.
The Nation had exclusively reported on Monday how the PDP reportedly allocated $3million each for “logistics” to its 36 state branches and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Most Bureau De Change operators and banks have, however, refused the “pressure” to convert the hard currency to Naira.
An EFCC source said: “A BDC operator was intercepted for shipping $2million from Abuja to Lagos for suspected money laundering.
“Upon interception by our detectives, the BDC operator admitted that Uyi Giwa-Osagie actually paid the Naira equivalent of $4million into his account in exchange for hard currency.
“We invited Uyi for interrogation on Monday and Tuesday. Our detectives have also conducted a search of his home. Some useful documents were retrieved. Investigation is, however, still in progress.”
“Apart from documents relating to posh properties at home and abroad, a copy of the EFCC Investigation Report on Atiku’s relationship with a jailed U.S. lawmaker, Williams Jefferson, was retrieved from Uyi.
“ An analysis of the account indicated that it yielded over $30million deposits mostly from a firm with a link with the PDP candidate,” the source said, pleading not to be named because of the “sensitivity” of the matter.
He added: “Obviously, there were remittances from the account of a multi-national company linked with the PDP candidate.”
Responding to a question, the source said: “We closed in on Uyi on Monday. We have decided to detain him pending the conclusion of investigation. “
Another source described Uyi as “a reputable lawyer to Atiku”. “It is not out of place if Atiku’s dossiers are found with him.
“ You also need to appreciate his background and antecedents, he is from a very wealthy heritage. By the time he opens up, the EFCC will know that he is not an overnight associate of Atiku.”
Also yesterday, the Department of State Services (DSS) withdrew its invitation to some Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials – the National Commissioner in charge of Operations, Prof. Okey Ibeanu and four top directors.
The others are: The Director of ICT, Chidi Nwafor; the Director of Procurement, Ken Ukeagu; the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Wole Osaze Uzzi and the Assistant Director, ICT, Bimbo Oladunjoye.
The five officers were invited through the DSS office in INEC for interrogation over alleged compromise of the operations of the electoral body.
INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu downplayed yesterday at a briefing the invitation of the five officers, which was communicated to them on Monday by a director of the DSS.
Although the invitation was later withdrawn, the development created tension in the commission.
A source said: “The DSS has been working on some clues on how INEC’s Smart Card Readers and sensitive materials got into the hands of some suspects in some states.
“The officers were only invited to shed light on the operational modalities of INEC and why the sabotage occurred. We called on them as part of the comprehensive investigation into some allegations raised by the INEC chairman last Saturday.
“Following a twist in the DSS investigation, the invitation was stepped down. I won’t tell you it was dropped because some INEC officers have been implicated in some deals.”
But a source within INEC said: “The five officers were officially communicated through the DSS office at the close of work on Monday. Early on Tuesday morning, a reminder was sent to all the invitees.
“The invitation generated tension in INEC because those summoned hail mostly from the Southeast, Southsouth and Southwest. Some of them have nothing to do with logistics. We did not know why the DSS left out the director of Logistics and the deputy from the North.
“Some staff also saw it as an attempt to intimidate INEC and its officers. The ethnic tension made the INEC management to wield influence to prevail on the DSS to have a rethink on the invitation because it can disrupt plans for Saturday elections.
“It was based on the grave security implications that the invitation of the five top officers was stepped down.”

MAN KILLS COLLEAGUE WITH DIGGER AFTER STEALING HIS N47,000
A bricklayer identified as ThankGod Emmanuel, of Sauka-Kahuta area of Minna, Niger State, has been arrested for allegedly killing his co-worker over N47,000.
The suspect, who was apprehended by a team of policemen attached to Tundun Wada Division, was said to have killed Tita Komla, of the same address, with digger.
It was learnt that Komla’s brother, Tete Joe, of Katampe, Abuja, had earlier reported that his brother was working with the suspect in his construction company at Sauka-kahuta.
He claimed that the suspect had called him on the phone to notify him that Komla had been killed by unknown persons.
It was also learnt that the suspect engaged his victim in a physical combat, killed him with a digger, robbed him of his N47,000 and dumped his body inside the gutter.
Emmanuel said that he killed Komla with a digger in order to take his money.
He said: “Komla did not know I wanted to rob him of his money. I killed him so that nobody will know that I stole his N47,000. I used digger to inflict injuries on his head and he died instantly.
“I least suspected that police will identify me as the one who killed him. Well, it’s really unfortunate.”
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muhammad Abubakar, said the suspect confessed to have committed the crime.
Abubakar also said that the suspect inflicted injuries on the head of his victim and made away with his money. The PPRO added that the suspect would be arraigned soon.
THE CHINESE QUEEN OF IVORY HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IN A TANZANIAN PRISON
Tanzania has charged a Chinese businesswoman for leading the country’s most notorious ivory poaching ring. Yang Fenglan was sentenced to 15 years in prison for smuggling the tusks of more than 350 elephants worth millions of dollars over several years to Asia. Two Tanzanian men were also found guilty of involvement in the ring.
The verdict ended years of prosecution and dealt a major blow against elephant poaching and ivory smuggling operations in the country, especially given the high profile of the defendant. Yang’s prosecution began in 2015 after authorities arrested her following a speedy car race in the capital Dar es Salaam.
Dubbed the “queen of ivory,” the 69-year-old has been living in Tanzania since the 1970s, managing her own restaurant, exporting pepper, and working as a translator given her proficiency in Swahili. She also served in key positions in the China-Africa Business Council of Tanzania and helped Chinese businesses set up across the East African nation.
Conservationists had welcomed her arrest saying it would “send shockwaves” through organized criminal networks. African elephant population declined to 415,000 in 2016, a drop of 111,000 in just a decade, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The World Wide Fund for Nature also says Tanzania lost 60% of its elephants in just five years, with numbers crashing from 109,000 in 2009 to just 43,000 in 2014.
China has long been one of the world’s biggest consumers of ivory, where they are used in medicine or in ornaments and jewelry. But even though Beijing instituted a ban in late Dec. 2017 on all ivory and ivory products, that hasn’t stopped increased amounts of African ivory from being traded in or be smuggled into China. African officials, facing increased pressure from wildlife advocates, have increasingly turned their attention to poaching, even urging the European Union to end its thriving legal ivory market.
NIGERIA CUSTOMS ARREST AND DETAINED 4 OFFICERS OVER KILLING
The Nigeria Customs Service says it has detained four members of the patrol team involved in the killing of a civilian ‘friend’ named Godwin Onoja.
According to a statement by its spokesman, DC Joseph Attah, a panel set up to investigate the killing could not conclude its investigation because the officer, who accidentally shot Onoja, Destiny Onebamho, was receiving medical attention after he was attacked by motorists following the killing.
Attah said following the unfortunate incident on Sunday 17th February 2019 at Shagamu Interchange involving Operatives of the Federal Operations Unit Zone A, the Customs has continued to maintain close contact with the bereaved family.
“We are pained by this sad development and share the grief of losing a fellow compatriot in a seemingly avoidable circumstance. We are and will continue to take every necessary step that will cushion the pain associated with losing a dear one,” Attah stated.
He further informed that the Comptroller-General of Customs Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) has directed a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident with the view to ensuring that justice is served.
“In line with this directive, the investigation panel headed by the Zonal Coordinator Zone A, ACG Kaycee Ekekezie has interrogated and detained four members of the patrol team.
“The panel could not immediately conclude the investigation because the actual officer (ASCI Destiny Onebamho) whose riffle discharged is presently receiving medical attention as a result of attack following the unfortunate incident.
“He will face the panel as soon as he is fit to do so, to enable the panel to conclude the investigation and recommend appropriate action(s).
“NCS is a reputable organization known for integrity and responsibility. In line with our corporate values, we will not shield any operative found wanting in this ongoing investigation. The Service appreciates the public concern and strong emotions drawn from the viral video with narratives that created various opinions.
“Nigerians will recall that in 2017, the Service made public its investigation and dismissal of five (5) officers implicated in the illegal release of the 661-pump action rifles from Apapa Port. The dismissed officers were immediately handed over for prosecution alongside the importer and agent. A prosecution that is ongoing at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi Lagos.
“In the same vein, the ongoing investigation will be holistic including looking at the weapon handling skills and actions that must be taken by the Service to possibly prevent future occurrence.
“We will continue to update the public details of every action taken in the handling of this unfortunate incident,” the statement read

EXPOSED: PDP USING SEE AND BUY STRATEGY TO WIN THE 2019 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
PDP Fingered In $3M Per State Cash-for-Vote Plot
Security agencies have uncovered how the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has allocated about $3million (N1.8billion) to each state branch of the party, allegedly for inducement of voters.
The cash was remitted before last Saturday’s postponement elections, but most state chapters were finding it difficult to change the cash to naira.

ABDULSALAMI ABUBAKAR AND MAURICE IWU FINGERED.
Revealed: PDP’s $3m per state cash-for-vote plot
•Ex-INEC chief named in deal •Peace Panel member romances opposition •Party denies claim
Security agencies have uncovered how the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has allocated about $3million (N1.8billion) to each state branch of the party, allegedly for inducement of voters.
The cash was remitted before last Saturday’s postponement elections, but most state chapters were finding it difficult to change the cash to naira because of the surveillance on Bureau De Change operators by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Also, the agencies have intercepted alleged compromise of some officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), policemen and other security agents in some states.
The intelligence report, including the alleged implication of a former top official of INEC, may be presented to the chairman of the electoral commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, by the security agencies.
A former Resident Electoral Commissioner is believed to be neck-deep in the massive cash-for-votes plot.
Besides, a member of the National Peace Committee headed by former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar has been fingered in “political romance” with the opposition, contrary to the mandate of the group.
The popular thinking is that the PDP has hidden under the guise of “logistics” to allocate about $3million (N1.8billion) per state, which security agencies discovered that it was for inducement of voters.
Based on the 36 states, about $111million (N66.6billion) has been deployed by the leading opposition party to influence voters.
The intelligence report indicated that the money was different from the cash allocated to “compromise some officers of INEC, policemen and security agents in some states” which had been marked by security agencies.
An intelligence source said: “ Reports so far have showed that the main opposition party has allocated $3m(N1.8billion) to each of its state chapters under the guise of logistics for the general elections.
“But intelligence confirmed that the cash is for vote buying with about N400,000 devoted to some polling units out of the nation’s 120,000.
“Some of the huge cash cannot be converted to Naira because of the surveillance on Bureau De Change operators by the EFCC and DSS.

“And most banks have become circumspect in view of a similar experience in 2015 in which about N23.9 poll bribery cash was shared through their branches.”
The source, who pleaded not to be named because of the “sensitivity” of the matter, gave insights into the alleged compromise of some INEC officers through a former top shots of the electoral commission who had been engaged as consultants.
The source added: “Detectives also discovered a ‘grand compromise’ of some INEC officers, policemen and others in some states. A former INEC top officer and ex-Resident Electoral Commissioner are implicated in the plans to compromise the nation’s electoral integrity.
“These former top INEC officers were found to have played a key role in the recruitment of the ad hoc staff in some strategic states by using internal links/ surrogates in INEC to perfect their plot. Many officers in INEC, who were recruited by these former officers, are still loyal to them.
“These ex-officers had infiltrated the system and could cause any sabotage of the poll at any point, if it does not favour those who hired them. This is why it is easier for the opposition to have every detail about the movement and actions of INEC chairman and his National Commissioners.
“The intelligence report will be made available to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, especially as it relates to its field officers in some states.
“As for policemen and other security agents, the appropriate authorities are handling specific cases. And these issues will be attended to before the beginning of the poll on Saturday.”
Asked if the intelligence report has been made available to the National Peace Committee, the source said: “It is still an intelligence document as I speak with you now.

“The challenge we are having also is that a member of the committee has been fingered in a political romance with the opposition because of vested interests in some deals.
“Notwithstanding, the government will decide on how and when to brief relevant stakeholders.”
Reacting, INEC said it was unaware of the existence of a recording of the PDP corrupting its men.
In the leaked telephone conversation, a top government official in Rivers State was heard mapping out plans on how to win the last Saturday’s election, which was rescheduled.
INEC officials were said to have been settled to pave the way for the ruling party in the state.
Besides, names of the officials were mentioned in the conversation, which include officials from neighbouring states.
The government official could also be heard issuing out warning to kill any INEC officials who fails to cooperate after collecting money from the government.
However, INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye, said the commission was yet to see the purported recording.
Okoye, who was responding to inquiry by The Nation, said: “I have not seen the recording you are alluding to.”
Also reacting, the PDP said the opposition party lacked the financial wherewithal to deploy such cash.
Its spokesman Kola Ologbodiyan: “We don’t have such funds anywhere, but we enjoy massive support and goodwill of a greater number of Nigerians. As an opposition party, where can we get that money.
“It was the same APC that mocked us a few weeks ago, saying that we were broke and that we could not fund our campaign. Now they have turned around to accuse us of spending such funds.
“Is it not strange that a ruling party is now portraying itself as the victim simply because they have been rejected by the people?
“Rather, it is the APC that has spent humongous amount on their campaign across the country and they are still spending. We have the figures and at the appropriate time we shall release them. For now, we are focused on the coming elections. So, we are very busy right now.”

BUHARI ORDERED LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO RUTHLESSLY DEAL WITH ANYONE WHO TRIES TO DISRUPT THE RESCHEDULED ELECTION
Snatch ballot box at the expense of your life, Buhari warns during APC caucus meeting
President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the military and law enforcement agencies to deal “ruthlessly” with anyone caught trying to disrupt the rescheduled February 23 presidential and National Assembly elections.
The President, who is seeking reelection on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, said he was not afraid of a free and fair election because he had received overwhelming supports from the majority of Nigerians.

Speaking on Monday at the opening of the APC National Caucus Meeting in Abuja, Buhari said he wanted Nigerians to be respected everywhere after the election, warning that anyone caught for ballot box snatching or leading thugs would do so at a risk to his life.
He said, “I do not expect anybody to make any disturbance. I have briefed the law enforcement agencies and the military to identify hot spots, flashpoints and they should be prepared to move.

“And anybody who decides to snatch ballot boxes or lead thugs to disturb it (election), maybe that would be the last unlawful action he would take.

Nigeria decides 2019: APGA accuses PDP of plotting to rig election| Daily Post
The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia says it has uncovered the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) grand plot to rig the general elections in the state. The state Chairman of the party, Mr Augustine Ehiemere, said this while briefing journalists in Umuahia on Sunday. Ehiemere, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Chima Onyekwere, said that the plan was busted on Fridaynight, when police reportedly arrested a man in unlawful possession of election materials.
He said that the materials included written result sheets that purportedly gave victory to PDP in the aborted Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly polls. He further alleged that the plot, involving top government officials, was to be executed using men in fake military uniforms. He said that the uniforms had already been purchased and stored in a secret location.
According to Ehiemere, the uniforms will be given to scores of carefully selected, trained and armed thugs, who would impersonate security operatives, while working for PDP. He said that part of the plot was to also use Toyota Hilux vans, fraudulently branded in army colour to carry the thugs round the state on the election day. He alleged that the thugs would intimidate voters and others on legitimate electoral duties as part of the designed to disrupt the voting process. Ehimere said that the plot was hatched to once again deny the good people of Abia the opportunity to exercise their democratic right to elect credible leaders.
He warned that the plot would have triggered off a chain of violent reactions capable of endangering the lives of innocent people, if not uncovered and halted.

10,000 ADP MEMBERS AND CHAIRMAN DECAMPED TO APC IN OYO STATE ON SATURDAY.
Oyo State Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Chief Folaranmi Owolabi, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with more than ten thousand members of his former party, on Thursday.
Citing alleged overbearing influence of a former Governor of the state and the governorship candidate of the ADP, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, the defectors said that they had no regrets taking the action barely 24 hours to the general election.
They also cited neglect of the state chapter by the national secretariat of the party, which they claimed had made them vulnerable, as part of their reasons.
Owolabi vowed to mobilize other defectors to campaign vigorously for the victory of the Oyo South Senatorial District candidate of the APC, Governor Abiola Ajimobi; state governorship candidate, Chief Adebayo Adelabu and other APC members.
The State Chairman of APC, Chief Akin Oke, who was represented by his Deputy, Hon. Lekan Adeyemo, received the former ADP members to the APC at the party’s state secretariat, Oke-Ado, Ibadan.
Since Alao-Akala defected from the APC to the ADP in October, last year, to clinch the party’s governorship ticket, Owolabi claimed said that the ex-governor had disrupted all the arrangements he met on ground.
.
He added that he was able to mobilize over ten thousand members of the ADP to the ruling APC because they had always seen the ruling party as better coordinated, fair and just in the way it handles issues involving members.
The embattled former chairman of the ADP and other aggrieved leaders had last December boycotted the public presentation of Alao-Akala as the party’s governorship candidate and his campaigns in protest.
Owolabi said, “Up till yesterday (Wednesday), I was the Oyo State chairman of the ADP; but, by the grace of God I and more than 10,000 members have dumped the ADP and we are now fully in APC.
“We were the foundation members of the ADP since the last two years. We nurtured the party to become a force to reckon with in Oyo State politics, which is what attracted the likes of Otunba Alao-Akala to come and join us.
“But, sadly, up till yesterday the national secretariat has never bothered about the welfare and upkeep of the state chapter of the party. No moral or financial support so far.
“We have been using our goodwill to nurture the party, but immediately Otunba Alao- Akala joined us last October he scattered everything. He disrupted the structure he met on ground and he cleverly snatched the party from us.
“Some of our members that had obtained forms to contest the state and National Assembly elections were shocked when he came and used his overbearing influence to snatch the tickets for his cronies contrary to his earlier promises.
Out of the 32 House of Assembly tickets, the former chairman said that the party decided to concede 21 to Alao-Akala in deference to his status, while foundation members and Social Democratic Party members that joined them were given seven and four tickets respectively.
Similarly, he claimed that 10 out of 14 House of Representative tickets were given to the ex-governor on arrival at the party.
But, he claimed that Alao-Akala went to the party’s headquarters in Abuja and substituted 95 per cent of the names.
Addressing the newcomers, the deputy chairman of the APC challenged them to go back to their wards and spread the gospel of better governance, which he said that the ruling party represents.
Adeyemo said, “I am happy that you realized that you have been in a wrong place. I don’t know how a party like ADP can withstand a party like APC that is in control of the federal and Oyo State governments. Even the PDP cannot withstand the heat.
“We are promising that your interest will be adequately taken care of. At least Alao-Akala contested against us in 2015 and lost. And when he joined us in the APC we did everything possible to satisfy him, but he left. Today he has gone to political oblivion.
“Go back to your wards and spread the good news. Go and campaign for the APC and ensure that we win the presidential, governorship and other elections in your domains. All that is due to you will be given to you without any prejudice.”5
ASIWAJU BOLA TINUBU URGED NIGERIANS TO MAINTAIN THEIR COMMITMENT ON ELECTION POSTPONEMENT IS INDEED PAINFUL.
"As the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress and simply as a Nigerian, I must express my profound concern and dissatisfaction with the unexpected, late hour postponement of the presidential and national assembly elections by INEC. According to INEC, the one-week postponement of the election from February 16 to February 23 was compelled by logistical difficulties encountered by the commission in transporting essential election material to polling in various parts of the country.
"While we appreciate the enormity of the logistical challenge that elections in a vast nation like ours poses to INEC, we are still pained that the Commission could not meet this challenge within the time allotted. We are also perplexed that INEC literally waited so late in the day to make known the obstacles preventing it from keeping faith to the election schedule. INEC could have and should have given the nation more ample and earlier warning. This could have perhaps lessened the pervasive disappointment that we all now feel. It also would have helped people better order their steps today.
"We have reports of eager voters rising early to leave their homes to cast their ballots only to be told upon arriving at their appointed polling stations that the election had been postponed. This should not have happened for it could well discourage people from coming out when the election takes place. Thus, we heartily commend those people for coming out in exercise of their fundamental rights and duties as citizen voters, who vote by vote, seek to build and perfect our democracy. For each voter is in part an architect and each one of your votes is a brick by which, when lain together, shall construct a strong democracy in such a way that it shall forever stand and endure. Thus, we appeal to all who actually came out to vote and to those who intended to vote today, to maintain your commitment. Do not allow this delay to deter you from the expression of your democratic rights. What you had set your mind to do on February 16, keep your mind and heart on for February 23.
"INEC has stated the reason for the delay and has expressed regret over the inconveniences it has caused. We must take INEC’s statement at face value and hold to the belief that INEC understands even more than ever the sober and grave responsibility it has to our nation and our democracy. INEC can only properly discharge that responsibility by conducting free and fair elections. While we cannot go back to repair what did or did not happen to cause this postponement, we all must encourage INEC to do all that is necessary so voting can smoothly proceed on February 23. Whatever our political affiliation, we must encourage INEC to overcome the difficulties in order to rise to this most important occasion. INEC must commit itself more than ever before to perform to its utmost so that these elections will be remembered as a free and fair exercise consonant with the best of international standards.
"In the end, elections must be held in such a manner that every vote carries the same weight and no vote is minimized because elections took place much earlier or later in one place than in another. Thus, it is better to experience a slight delay to conduct the elections properly rather than to conduct the elections piecemeal and uneven fashion. No one will absolve INEC if such a fate befalls this all-important election. The electoral body must use the one-week extension mend its logistics gaps and lapses. This delay has clearly provoked significant anger and disappointment among the people. The voters were ready and INEC should have been equally as prepared and ready as the voters. Yet, we ask that the people contain their anger and remain calm. Let no one be tempted to breach the peace because of this delay.
"In the greater scheme of things, a one-week delay is not overly burdensome when compared to the importance of conduct of free and just elections in the establishment of representative democracy and good governance in our land. Please, persevere just a bit longer to ensure that the elections on February 23 truly reflect the will of the people. Whatever obstacles may come, be they large or small, let us show the world the Nigerian people will not be deterred from realizing the democracy for which we have fought and sacrificed so long and so hard to achieve".
