Gunman who 'killed his girlfriend, her two children and their grandmother before opening fire on cops' could face death penalty

A Gunman who killed his girlfriend, her two children, and their grandmother, before opening fire on cops is likely going to face a death penalty for the bloody crime.

46-year-old Richard Darren Emery of St. Charles, Missouri reportedly shoots his 39-year-old girlfriend Kate Kasten, her children eight-year-old Zoe Kasten and 10-year-old Jonathan Kasten and their grandmother 61-year-old Jane Moeckel late Friday.

He also exchanged gunfire with officers as he fled and was captured several hours later wounded and covered in blood.

Emery who is facing 15 charges, including first-degree murder could face the death penalty once the investigation is complete, according to Prosecutors.

Prosecuting Attorney Tim Lohmar condemned the incident in a news conference calling it 'horrific.' 

He said: 'What can possess someone to take the life of a child, is beyond on me - and we may never know.

'This one, in particular, was the worst example of a domestic violence case. Anytime you have a domestic violence case you worry about the safety of the victim, and this would be your worst nightmare.' 

'It's premature for us to make any sort of pronouncement about that right now, but I can tell you this thing looks and smells like a death penalty case,' Lohmar added. 

According to the report, the children's father Kory Kasten passed away after losing his battle with cancer last summer. 

Former Lagos Comissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, retires from police

Former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, and nine other senior police officers, have retired from the police force.

Owoseni who was the commissioner of police in Lagos state between July 2015 and September 2017, retired on Saturday, December 29th after 35 years in service.

Asides Owoseni, the other retired senior police officers include AIG Abdul Bube, AIG Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, CP Agyole Abeh, CP Joseph Agaji, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu, CP Bello Ahmed, CP Abdullahi Ibrahim, CP Bello Yahaya, CP Adekinte Ademoju, CP Wakili Maye, CP Fave Semili and CP Ahmed Magaji.

Also retired from the force were 55 police officers of the ranks of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Commissioner of Police (CP), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

The Federal Government says it will in due course institute a suitable memorial to immortalize the country's first Executive President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who passed away Friday December 28, 2018, aged 93.

This promise was made in Sokoto on Sunday by President Muhammadu Buhari, while paying a condolence visit to the Shagari family. In a letter to the Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, read by the governor at the event, the President stated:

"I received the very sad news of the passing away of Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"This, indeed, is a grievous loss, which will be felt throughout Nigeria, irrespective of any difference. The late Alhaji Shagari was a landmark figure being virtually our last link to the post-independence government of Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa , and the first elected Executive President of Nigeria.

"Please convey to his immediate family, the government and the people of Sokoto State my heartfelt condolences on the passing away of this great statesman. The Federal Government will in due course institute a suitable memorial to the late former President. May his soul rest in peace."

Governor Ambode appoints Hakeem Muri-Okunola as Lagos State's new Head Of Service

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the appointment of Hakeem Muri-Okunola as the 21st Head of Service in Lagos State.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Habib Aruna, said Muri-Okunola’s appointment followed the retirement of Mrs. Folasade Adesoye on December 27th. According to Aruna in a statement, Muri-Okunola was the former Executive Secretary, Land Use and Allocation Committee, between 2005 and 2011.  

Until his appointment, he was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Social Development. The statement quoted Ambode as thanking the outgoing HOS, Adesoye, for her meritorious service to the state and wished her well in her future endeavours.  

Similarly, the governor also appointed six new Permanent Secretaries. They are: Dr. Goncalves Fausat; Mr. Kosoko Adeyemi; Dr. Balogun Sherifat; Mr. Adeniji Olufemi; Mrs. Adelaja Omobolanle and Dr. Lawal Temidayo.

The new HOS and the Permanent Secretaries would be sworn-in on Monday at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

37-year-old councillor shot dead in Ekiti

A 37-year-old councilor representing Ado Ward 9 at Ado Local Government Council, Deji Akeredolu, was killed by unknown gunmen on Friday December 28th. 

According to reports, Akeredolu and his wife were said to have alighted from a motorbike at the junction to their house at about 10pm when the gunmen struck and fired shots at him from the back.

 The victim was among the elected local government officials suspended by Ekiti State House of Assembly a fortnight ago. He was also said to be a personal assistant to the Peoples Democratic Party deputy governorship candidate in the July 21 governorship election in Ekiti State, Deji Ogunsakin

An eyewitness who witnessed the moment Akeredolu was killed, said 

“After the gunshots, the first thing we noticed was that the Camry car that had been parked at the junction sped off recklessly. Next was the shout for help by the wife.

“We rushed to the scene and found the councilor in a pool of his blood. We rushed him to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.”

The deceased was buried on Saturday, December 29th

' I was coming home this evening and I stumbled on this woman that was beaten  by her husband. I took her to the husband to find out what happened, he told me it's none of my business that he has the right to beat her. I quickly sent her for treatment and got the idiot arrested.

The violent husband was arrested last Friday, and has been in cell. The victim on Sunday made an appeal for his release but asked that he is made to sign an undertaken stating tha the will never beat her again.

Former Sunderland footballer Asamoah Gyan is reportedly broke, he has just '£600 in his bank account

Flamboyant footballer, Asamoah Gyan, who plays as a striker for Turkey's Kayserispor and captains the Ghanaian national team, is reportedly broke and has just £600 in his bank account.

Asamoah who left Sunderland in 2012, spent three years at UAE club Al Ain where he earned almost £200k a week and scored an impressive 123 goals in 120 appearances. He later made a big money move to the Chinese Super League, spending the 2015 and 2016 seasons at Shanghai SIPG where he earned £227,000-a-week before returning to the UAE with Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai.

Last year, he moved to Turkey's Kayserispor and now things appear to have taken a turn for the worse and he is reportedly unable to provide for his family.

According to MyNewsGh.com, the Ghana captain was asked if he had any other accounts in the countries where he has played football and Gyan, who has 51 goals in 105 appearances for his country, reportedly said: "My front and back, up and down is that money (£600) you see there."

Family sources say he has not spoken to his wife or three children since August, even at Christmas when he usually visits, and his kids are understood to be getting worried about their dad's whereabouts.

Back in October, it was reported that he filed for divorce from his wife, Gifty Gyan, at the Divorce and Matrimonial Division of the High Court, Accra. He also reportedly denied fathering their three children and demanded a DNA test be carried out on the kids to prove he is their father.

According to the report, he's awaiting DNA tests to confirm their paternity, with the results coming out in early January 2019.

Lawrence while speaking to LIB this morning detailed what really went down at the event and how he was slapped. 

In his response on Twitter a few minutes ago, Davido said he didn't slap him and he went on to say, 'Ok kiss Daniel manager I apologize for doing nothing'.

One month after, missing Nigerian student Promise Chukwudum found dead in Canada

Promise Chukwudum, a student at the University of Regina, in Saskatchewan, Canada, has been found dead more than a month after he went missing. Police found his corpse in a creek area behind the Shell gas station on the corner of Sherwood Drive and McIntosh Street, at about 4:45 p.m. on December 21, 2018.

The 19-year-old Computer Science student and rugby player went missing in the early hours of November 17. The police said there was no indication Chukwudum’s death was a result of criminal act.

The Regina Police Service and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service are conducting a death investigation to fully understand the circumstances of his death. As of Dec. 10, police said they had to consider the possibility that he may have sought shelter somewhere from the cold, because the night he disappeared, the temperatures dipped below -20 C.

Davido reaches out to lady who was sexually assaulted at his concert

On Friday morning, a lady took to her Twitter page to narrate how she was allegedly sexually assaulted by some men at Davido's concert. The lady identified as Karimah, stated that Davido looked on as she was being assaulted.

In response, Davido took to Twitter to apologise to the said lady and also promised to reach out to her so as to purchase all the items stolen from her, as well as pay for her medical checkup. See his tweet below.

Dino Melaye is wanted for an attempted murder case that happened in July - Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has explained why its officers are currently laying seige outside the Abuja home of Senator Dino Melaye.

A statement from Police spokesman, DCP Jimoh Moshood, said Dino was declared wanted by the force to answer questions regarding an attempted culpable homicide.

According to Jimoh, Dino and his thugs had tried to kill a police sergeant Danjuma Saliu while he was on duty in Kogi state on 19th July 2018.  The police spokesperson said Dino has been invited by the Kogi state police command to answer questions regarding this case but has bluntly refused to honor their invitation.

“The Police operatives currently in the residence of Senator Dino Melaye are to effect his arrest to answer to the case of attempted culpable homicide on the shooting of a Police Officer, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force (PMF) while on duty at a stop and search point along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi state.

“The above offence was committed by Senator Dino Melaye and his armed thugs in Kogi State on the 19th July, 2018 when they shot and wounded a police officer, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force (PMF) while on duty at a stop and search point along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi state.

“The Police Officer is yet to recover from the gunshot injury he sustained during the attack and still under intensive medical care. The Police investigators have written the Clerk of the National Assembly for Senator Dino Melaye to report at Kogi State Police Command, CIID, Lokoja for him to answer to these offences against him under investigation in Kogi State Police Command but he has bluntly refused to report himself to the Police.

“The Police operatives will continue to be in wait at the residence of Senator Dino Melaye until he surrenders himself for arrest. The offence for which Senator Dino Melaye is being investigated is capital in nature and not compoundable. The Force will not tolerate attack on its personnel by any individual no matter how highly placed. The law must take its course,” Moshood said.

He added that members of the public will be kept informed on further development in the investigation of the matter.

Recall that Dino took to his twitter handle earlier today to raise alarm after sighting a number of police officers outside his premises.

“But when he (Badeh) saw Churuma with a gun, he did not do like he wanted to reverse, he attempted to hit Churuma with his car but Churuma dodged to the side and then opened fire on him.

“After that, we opened the car and found a bag of money and went with it. When they opened the bag, the money was beyond what I had ever seen before.”

Grandchildren in shock as wads of cash hidden by their grandfather during the Biafra war falls from ceiling

The grandchildren of a man were shocked when wads of cash fell from the ceiling of their late grandfather's home.

Prince Hollywood, who back in November accused Bobrisky of collecting money from him only to refuse to do the job he was paid for, returned to Nigeria for the Christmas holiday and travelled to his ancestral home. While there with his siblings and cousins, they witnessed bundles of money fall from a hole in the ceiling.

It is believed that the man hid the money there during the Biafra war and no one knew about it for decades until it fell this Christmas.

10 people injured as 4.8 magnitude earthquake hits Italy on Boxing Day

An earthquake triggered by Italy’s Mount Etna volcano has jolted eastern Sicily, injuring 10 people and prompting frightened Italian villagers to flee their homes.  

Italy’s Civil Protection officials said the quake, at 3:19 a.m. Wednesday, was part of a swarm of some 1,000 tremors, most of them barely perceptible, that are linked to Etna’s ongoing eruption this week.

The 4.8 magnitude earthquake early Wednesday damaged some rural homes, including structures that had been abandoned years ago, toppled a statue in a church in the town of Santa Venerina and opened up cracks on a highway, which was closed for inspection.

The Italian news agency ANSA said an 80-year-old man was extracted from the rubble of a house. Government undersecretary Vito Crimi said there were no fatalities and 10 slight injuries.

22-year-old man stabs his sister over food in Rivers

A young lady is currently nursing an injury she sustained after her 22-year-old brother stabbed her in the back because she was slow in making his food at their home in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

Their older sister, Sonia Joy Esego, who shared the story online, says she has reported the matter to the police.

N68bn fraud: EFCC seizes 46 houses from Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign director, Ngozi Olejeme

A Federal High Court, Abuja presided over by Justice Ijeoma L. Ojukwu on Friday, December 21, 2018, ordered the interim forfeiture of assets and properties traced to one Ngozi Olejeme, a former chairman of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF and also the Deputy Chairman, Finance Committee of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation in the 2015 election.

A statement from the EFCC says Justice Ojukwu granted the application and ruled that “an order is hereby made attaching/forfeiting in the interim, all assets and properties set out in the schedule attached to this application, to the Federal Government of Nigeria, pending the hearing and determination of the trial in Charge No. CR/365/17 pending at”.

The order was made, sequel to an Ex-parte Originating Summons, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, through its counsel, Elizabeth Alabi, on December 12, 2018, praying the court for the following orders:

“An order of interim attachment/forfeiture of the asset attachment of the properties set out in the schedule attached herein”.

“An order stopping any disposal, conveyance, mortgage, lease, sale or alienation or otherwise of the properties/assets described in the schedule attached herein”.

The schedule of properties referred to in the Summons include: parcels of lands, duplexes, a bank building, and hotel buildings, amongst others.

Some of them are: one storey semi-detached residential building, located at house/flat 86, 11 Crescent, Kado estate, Abuja; a fenced plot of land with C of O No. DTSR16326, located at plots 104 and 105, Block IV, Phase V, Core Area, Asaba, Delta state; Six units of one bedroom apartment; one unit of five bedroom bungalow; a block of six units of office space, all located at 196, Melford Okilo road, Amarata-Epie, Yenegoa, Bayelsa state.

Others include: one duplex and 4 house residential building with swimming pool, gate house, fully furnished with state of the art facilities, located at No. 25 Kainji Crescent, off Maitama, Abuja. This same property is also known as plot No. 738 Cadastral zone AO5, Maitama, Abuja; A storey building; two bungalows; printing press with printing equipment; a fenced empty land measuring 1422.765 square meters, located at km.9 Asaba-Benin Express road, Asaba, Delta state.

Another property is a twin duplex office building, located at Plot R/151 (No. 30A) Kingsway Road, Old GRA, Enugu State, registered at Enugu Land Registry.

The Commission, through the application, also sought for the interim forfeiture of two Duplexes with Boys Quarters, Generator House, Gym and Car Park, located at No. 3D Opolo, Old Commissioner’s Quarters, Yenegoa, Bayelsa State; Ten plots of land, located at plot 7, 8, 11, 12, 16, 20, 23, and 24 Phase IV, Block 111, Core Area, Asaba, Delta state, with C of O No. DSTR1194; A two bedroom bungalow, located at No. 3 Ogwa Godspower avenue, Oshimili South LGA, Asaba, Delta State; A two bedroom bungalow, located at No. 11 Chiweta Street, off Ezenie Avenue, Asaba, Delta State, measuring 527.141 square meters; A two bedroom bungalow, located at James Odittah Street, Oshimili LGA, Asaba, Delta State, amongst many others.

Governor Rochas Okorocha declares to run for Presidency In 2023! What do you guys think?

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has said that his mind is fixed on becoming the first elected civilian president of Igbo extraction in 2023.  

The governor made the remark when he hosted members of the Orlu Zone Congress of Journalists (OZCOJ) in his office. He said that all the campaigns of calumny against him was because his detractors have realised that he is the most eligible and most detribalised Igbo man.  

The governor described himself as the rallying point for all Ndigbo and the only one who can bridge unity, understanding and togetherness in order to realize Igbo presidency in 2023.  

Speaking earlier, the Coordinator of OZCOJ, Ambassador Ikenna Onuoha, said that Orlu people were happy that one of their sons represented them very well as governor of Imo, and by being a worthy ambassador of the zone.

Iraq makes Christmas Day an official nationwide holiday to mark the 'occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ'

The Iraqi Government has made Christmas Day a national holiday in their country.

The major announcement was made today after the Iraqi Cabinet approved an amendment to its national holiday's law which creates a new official one 'on the occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ'. 

In Iraq, where 95 percent are Muslim with around 300,000 Christians, Christmas Day had been designated as a religious break only for the Iraqi Christian community, but with the new amendment, the holiday now extends to everyone. 

'The @IraqiGovt announces Christmas Day to be an official holiday across Iraq. Happy Christmas to our Christian citizens, all Iraqis and to all who are celebrating around the world,' the Iraqi government wrote on Twitter. 

'We extend our warmest wishes to Christians in Iraq and around the world for a very happy and peaceful Christmas,' it added.
